Anza Borrego Desert State Park is a vast wilderness area located in eastern San Diego County, California. It spans over 600,000 acres, making it the largest state park in California and one of the largest in the United States. The park is named after the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the Spanish word "borrego," which means bighorn sheep.

The park's climate is characterized by hot summers and mild winters, with temperatures frequently exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months. The geography of the park is diverse, ranging from badlands and canyons to palm groves and cactus gardens. The park is also home to many unique geological formations, such as the Yaqui Pass and the Pumpkin Patch.

Anza Borrego is perhaps best known for its wildflower blooms, which occur in the spring when the desert is transformed into a sea of colorful flowers. This phenomenon attracts visitors from all over the world and is a sight to behold.

While the timing and location of the wildflowers can vary from year to year depending on weather and other factors, there is one spot worth mentioning. Henderson Canyon Rd near Borrego Valley Rd is known for its beautiful wildflowers, including fields of yellow daisies and purple sand verbena. The road is a popular destination for wildflower enthusiasts, with several pullouts and trails offering opportunities to see the blooms up close. Please keep in mind it is NEVER okay to trample the wildflowers. Please stick to established turnouts and keep your feet on established trails.

While the wildflowers get a lot of attention, Anza Borrego State Park has a lot more to offer. In fact, the park is home to several distinct areas, each with its own unique characteristics. The Carrizo Badlands Overlook offers stunning views of the badlands and is a popular spot for birdwatching. The Calcite Mine area is known for its interesting geological formations and is home to several species of cactus, including the barrel cactus and the cholla cactus. Borrego Palm Canyon is a lush oasis tucked into a steep desert canyon, and home to the only native palm tree in California, the California fan palm. This canyon is one of the most popular hikes in the area and is pictured below.

Anza Borrego is home to a variety of wildlife species, including the iconic bighorn sheep. These animals blend in so well to the desert landscape that it’s often hard to spot them unless they are on the move. Other notable species include the desert tortoise, the coyote, and the black-tailed jackrabbit.
